Scrapings from the Cutting Room Floor - Dover Cruise Terminal 2007

These are just a few from probably hundreds taken at Dover Cruise Terminal this summer. They are in no particular order but I’ve tried to illustrate the wide variety of vessels we see here in Dover.

1.  An early visitor was Hurtigruten’s Nordnorge. This is the one that later took on the passengers from the Explorer which sank in the Antarctic.

2.   Not as big as the Constellation, but Celebrity’s Century is quite an impressive ship.

3.   MSC Opera swinging into Terminal 2.

4.   Alexander Von Humoldt (ex Saga Pearl, Minerva, Okean ) will return next year with her former name - Minerva - as part of the revived Swan Hellenic company.

5.   Phoenix Reisen’s Amadea (ex–Asuka)

6.   The venerable and highly regarded Marco Polo.

7.   Arielle.

8 – 10.   Three shots of early morning arrivals of Fred. Olsen’s Boudicca.

11.   An ‘orrible tragedy was avoided in May when we nearly lost our webmaster to the swinging stern of the Costa Atlantica (nah, not really – she just looked a bit close).

12.   One of those amazing tricks of light the early morning can give. If you’ve got a camera with you it’s best to get it out sharpish, because the effect will be gone within a couple of minutes.

13 – 15.   A couple of the Constellation – did you know that Celebrity Cruises is a cruise line founded in 1989 by the Greek Chandris Group. and the signature "X" on Celebrity ship funnels is the Greek letter chi, for "Chandris"? – well I never!

16.   The Regatta and, in the foreground, a device on the Admiralty Pier designed to prevent fat Edwardian people from clambering around.

17.   The Costa Atlantica (the one that nearly squashed Ray and Nigel) and the Black Watch.

18 – 19.   It’s funnel time. Here’s the Costa Classica with those peculiar Costa stovepipes. ….

20.   …. and the Astor, trying to upstage the Maxim Gorkiy for the most outrageous funnel.

21.   “Somebody mention me?”

22.   Braemar.

23 – 25.   Size isn’t everything – but it certainly gets you noticed. The MSC Opera and the Costa Magica.

26.   The Delphin under way.

27.  The much loved Deutchland. A beautiful little ship.

28.   The Olsen sisters Boudicca and Black Watch remarkably in port together (there are a number of photos of these two together already on the forum). But could we contain our glee for what was to follow in September?

29.   The Black Watch from the pilot launch. Boudicca is just visible far left.

30.   The lovely little Island Sky.

31.   …. and again with the Trinity House vessel Alert.

32.   “Does my stern look big in this port?”.  MSC Lirica.

33.   Norwegian Dream at high tide.

34.   Another trick of the weather. Prinsendam just before a summer downpour.

35.   Prinsendam again with her familiar jelly-mould lines.

36.   An early morning arrival (aren’t they all?) for the MSC Rhapsody…

37.   A few hours later she leaves past the Constellation.

38.   Seabourn Pride slips past the Costa Magica.

39.   Seven Seas Voyager arriving.

40.   Seven Seas Voyager departing.

41 – 43.   The inaugural cruise of the Norwegian Gem resulted in quite a memorable knees-up in Dover. Here are a couple more night shots.

44 - 46.   And Lo ….. a ship-spotters delight. The Albatros, the third sister of the same build as the Black Watch and Boudicca arrived on the same day in September as the …. Black Watch.

47.   The Star Princess (with that spoiler).

48.   A Las Vegas Hotel.

49.   Star Princess being chased out of harbour by a fishing boat.

50 - 51.   A bit of a traffic jam here. Star Princess, Norwegian Dream and Deutchland.

52.   Another Holland-America departure – this time the Veendam

53.   The Norwegian Crown surprised us all by briefly dropping in from New York prior to sailing to Hamburg, where she’s being stretched and converted into Fred. Olsen’s Balmoral.

54.   Costa Atlantica again – where is everybody?

55.   With her exquisite style the Hebridean Princess makes her customary out-of-season call.

56.   MSC Opera window cleaning kit.

57.   Constellation window cleaning kit.

58 – 63.   What would any collection of Dover Harbour pictures be without these Diadems of the Ocean? – the Saga Sisters. May they sail gracefully forever!

64 – 68.   Often overlooked – in more ways than one (not difficult when you’re on the deck of a big cruise ship), but always appreciated. The tugs Dauntless and Doughty.

69.   ……. And the pilot vessels – this one is the Dovorian.

70.   The Boys in Blue
